Labor MP Paul Gibson said Sir Charles Kingsford Smith would be ashamed of the airlines' tactics, accusing them of blaming mechanical failures for the cancellation of half-empty flights, reports The Daily Telegraph.
After railing about his own experiences with Jetstar and high-profile delays the airline has recently experienced, he went as far as questioning whether the airline should be allowed to continue flying.
"They have hit turbulence that isn't going down too well with the public," Mr Gibson said.
"They don't seem to want to fly their planes unless they're full, they seem to have a motto that unless the plane is full all of a sudden they have developed mechanical problems and your flight is cancelled.
"If Jetstar has to cancel so many flights because of mechanical problems one has got to ask the question, should they be in the sky in the first place?"
She denied mechanical faults were blamed.
Mr Gibson said six friends travelling to Sydney for the State of Origin match from the Gold Coast almost missed the game after their Jetstar flight was delayed by hours.
They decided to book on a Virgin Blue flight to ensure they arrived in Sydney on time but are now out of pocket $1000.
